The North Essex coast offers some wonderful places for seaside walks with your dog. From wide sandy beaches to quieter coastal paths, there are plenty of dog-friendly spots to explore.
If you're planning a trip to the North Essex coast with your dog, here are some of the best dog friendly beaches to visit. I’ve listed them in order of proximity to Sea View Cottage, my dog-friendly coastal holiday cottage by the sea in Frinton-on-Sea.
1. Frinton Beach

Frinton Beach is one of the most popular beaches on the North Essex coast and a lovely place for long seaside walks with your dog.
Most areas of the beach welcome dogs year-round. During the summer months (May to September), a central section of the beach has seasonal restrictions, but other areas remain dog friendly. Dogs are also welcome along the seafront promenade all year round, provided they are kept on a lead.

2. Walton-on-the-Naze Beach

Just along the coast, Walton-on-the-Naze offers beautiful beach walks and fascinating cliffs known for fossil hunting.
Dogs are welcome along much of the beach, although a few sections have seasonal restrictions during the summer months.
The area around Naze Tower is particularly popular with dog walkers, with coastal paths, nature reserve trails and beautiful sea views across the Essex coastline.

3. Holland on Sea

Just a short drive from Frinton-on-Sea, Holland Haven Country Park is a wonderful dog friendly beach for scenic dog walks along the North Essex coast.
There is a large car park for easy access, although you can walk all the way along the coast here from Frinton, and the park offers a mix of coastal paths, open grassland and salt marsh. It’s particularly popular with walkers and wildlife lovers.
Dogs are welcome here, and the wide open spaces provide plenty of opportunities for longer countryside walks close to the sea. It’s a lovely place to explore if you’re looking for somewhere a little quieter than the main beaches.
You could even make a day of it here. My lovely friend Carla offers several beautiful beach huts to hire for the day at Holland-on-Sea, where dogs are of course welcome. You can visit and book one of her beach huts here: https://www.beachhuthirehollandonsea.co.uk
4. Brightlingsea

The coastal town of Brightlingsea offers a lovely mix of seaside charm and waterside walks.
Brightlingsea Beach is popular for relaxed coastal strolls, with views across the estuary and plenty of sailing boats in the harbour. Dogs are welcome along much of the beach, although the section around Batemans Tower has summer restrictions.
The surrounding promenade and waterfront paths make it a pleasant place for a seaside walk and there is a footpath all the way to Alresford Creek that follows the old railway line and takes in the Colne Estuary National Nature Reserve.
Afterwards, Brightlingsea Lido Café is a great spot to stop for coffee or lunch after a walk along the seafront, and they welcome dogs both inside and outside.

5. Dovercourt Bay

Dovercourt Bay is another lovely North Essex beach where dogs are welcome throughout much of the year, although some sections again have seasonal restrictions between May and September.
The beach has gently shelving sand and shingle alongside a long promenade. The iconic Dovercourt lighthouses make it a particularly scenic place for evening walks along the coast.

Frequently Asked Questions About Visiting Essex Beaches with Your Dog
Which parts of Frinton Beach are dog friendly all year round?
Between May and September, Tendring District Council places seasonal restrictions on dogs in certain central sections of the beach. However, dogs are still welcome on other areas of the beach, and they can also be walked along the seafront promenade year-round as long as they are kept on a lead. For the most up-to-date information, you can view the official dog restriction map provided by Tendring District Council, which shows exactly where the summer restrictions apply.
Does the beach disappear at high tide?
Yes — many Essex beaches, including Frinton and Walton, change significantly with the tide.
At low tide, large areas of sand are revealed, creating plenty of space for long walks along the shoreline.
At high tide, the sea reaches much closer to the promenade and seawall, so it’s always worth checking the local tide tables before planning a beach walk.
Tendring's Tide Table can be found here
Are Essex beaches good for dog walks?
Yes. The Essex coastline is well known for its wide sandy beaches, coastal nature reserves and scenic walking routes, making it a wonderful destination for visitors travelling with dogs. Many beaches allow dogs throughout the year, with some seasonal restrictions during the summer months.
What is the best time of year to visit the Essex coast with a dog?
Spring, autumn and winter are particularly lovely times to visit. The beaches are often quieter, making them perfect for peaceful seaside walks with your dog. Many visitors also enjoy cosy winter stays by the coast, returning from fresh sea air and beach walks to relax indoors after a day exploring.
