Most people come to Frinton for the beach.

Then realise they don’t actually leave it as much as they expected.

But, if you do, within 30 minutes you can go from a quiet, unspoilt coastline to a buzzing pier, a countryside walk, a spa afternoon or tea and scones piled high with jam.

Here are some of my go-to recommendations, the ones I share in the welcome pack and get mentioned again and again in reviews.

🎡 Clacton Pier - For a Proper Seaside Day (15 mins)

Clacton Pier is where I suggest heading if you’ve got kids and want some proper seaside fun.

  • Rides, arcades and plenty going on

  • Food is quick and simple - think chips, hot dogs, ice cream and doughnuts

  • Plenty of indoor bits if the weather isn't great - crazy golf, bowling, pub darts

  • Regular free firework displays

  • And loads outside too - a big wheel, seaside train ride, sea fishing and a rollercoaster

It’s very different to Frinton, but that’s the appeal. A few hours here, then back to somewhere quieter.

🌊 Walton-on-the-Naze - Easy Win for Younger Families (10 mins)

Walton-on-the-Naze is where you go when you want a more traditional seaside feel than Frinton.

  • Kids leaning over the UK’s second-longest pier with buckets, catching crabs

  • Wide, sandy beaches with rows of multicoloured beach huts

  • Head north along the coastline towards the red crag cliffs. You can often find fossils here, including the occasional shark tooth

  • And if you’re up for it, head up the Naze Tower for views right across the coastline

If you walk from the cottage along the seafront, it takes about 25 minutes and makes a really nice way to arrive.

It’s still relaxed, just with a bit more buzz than Frinton and there's also a great play area for kids overlooking the sea.

⚓ Brightlingsea - Boats, Water & a Slower Pace (25 mins)

Brightlingsea has more of a working harbour feel than the other nearby towns.

Boats in the harbour at Brightlingsea, Essex

  • Boats coming and going throughout the day

  • Paddleboarders and small sailing boats out on the water

  • A few cafés where you can sit outside and watch everything happening

In the warmer months, the lido is worth a visit. It’s open-air, volunteer-run and a bit of a throwback in the best way.

🦭 Local Nature Reserves - Quiet, Wild & Completely Unspoilt (15 mins)

The John Weston & Hamford Water National Nature Reserves.

  • Birds everywhere - circling, calling, always something moving overhead

  • Big skies, rough grassland, red crag cliffs and hardly anyone else around

  • You may even spot a seal or two on the mudflats

The Naze Tower and expansive grasslands at Walton-on-the-naze, Essex coast

Start and end your time at the Naze Nature Discovery Centre, with café and shop, by the Naze Tower. Take a boat around Skipper's Island. Or just walk one of the many dog friendly nature trails.

No distractions. Just space.

🧖‍♀️ Lifehouse Spa - When You Fancy a Treat (10 mins)

Lifehouse Spa & Hotel is the opposite of the above.

They have an extensive range of treatments available. There's also a thermal spa area and pool, relaxation areas and 12 acres of English Heritage gardens. Proper switch-off mode.

It’s adults-only, with a range of spa day packages to suit all tastes.

🍓 Tiptree - Jam, Scones & a Proper Treat (30 mins)

A jar of raspberry Tiptree jam

Tiptree is a bit of an Essex classic.

Warm scones. Thick cream. Generous jam.

You’ll probably leave with more jars than planned.

🐘 Colchester - When You Want a Bit of Everything (30 mins)

The zoo is set in 60 acres of parkland and with over 150 species and you can easily fill a day with elephant feeding, lemur encounters, soft play for little ones and multiple play areas for bigger children.

The city itself, on the other hand, is full of history, lunch spots and shops to meander around....

🌿 Dedham Vale – The Countryside Escape

Dedham Vale is all winding paths, water and open countryside.

  • Walk by the river

  • Stop at Flatford Mill

  • Find a pub and stay a while

✨ Final Thoughts

Some guests pack their days with plans.

Others walk to the beach, grab a coffee, and see where the day goes.

Both work here.
